The hotel closed in 2012; demolition was "estimated" at "early 2016".

Up next in the process -- which involves the Hawaii County Planning Department, Army Corps of Engineers, FEMA and the State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD) -- is obtaining approval of the Archaeological Preservation Plan and Archaeological Monitoring Plan from SHPD.

Aren't these are the same entities which held up the Queen K widening? Seems like State has entire departments/divisions dedicated to holding up projects, and they don't care how long it takes or how much it costs because they already have jobs.

From kalakoa's link:

“Everything we can do or can submit has been submitted and done,” said Alapaki Nahale-a...

His vision for the inclusive educational complex... is as a piko where prospective learners of all ages and backgrounds can come to experience the brilliance of early Hawaiian thinkers and engineers.
...
“It’s a site where a lot of our culture, our leadership, our learning and our technologies were centered,” he explained. “We’ve got a unique ability right now to bring that back and to elevate the status of our native Hawaiian students, and all of our students in this area.”

And there you have it. It's not just a loss of jobs, it's a loss of an educational opportunity for keiki, not only Native Hawaiian, but "prospective learners of all ages and backgrounds."

When observatories are targeted with buckshot by Protectors and pre-Protectors, everyone, including Kam Schools takes a hit. Try and place the blame on the state, the county, and DLNR and they will exert control over all land issues, even the ones they are specifically established to support and restore.

Kam Schools Trust was created to provide an education for Native Hawaiian students, which is precisely what they are trying to do at the site of the old Keauhou Beach Hotel, not dissipate their funds on attorneys fees. If you can't allow the one functioning agency for Hawaiian interests to take care of their own "fishponds... dry stack... sacred lands" who can you trust to do it? The ever increasing layers of state bureaucracy, insuring their own long term employment?

Plenty of blame to go around as they say, but I think the protestors can take some credit in creating the unintended consequences seen here.

You could never convince a monkey to give you a banana by promising him limitless bananas after death in monkey heaven.

Kam school trust was set up for ALL the children of Hawaii not to spoil just a few of with Polynesian genetics nor to create divide and ill feelings btwn the children. The queen was married to a caucasian man and took much pride in embracing all races.

It's a shame then, that her legacy is now one of racial segregation.
