The replacement gear is readily available, inexpensive, and made of modern materials that makes it a permanent replacement. The problem is that if you've never seen the inside of one of these old machines, they are literally built like a complex timepiece with dozens of gears, timing mechanisms, etc, and the broken piece is at the bottom of it. It takes special tools and nearly forgotten knowledge to perform the surgery.
BUT, I had forgotten the super glue / baking soda trick. I guess its possible I could repair the gear without removing it, the split might be accessible. I doubt it would last long, but it might not hurt to try. I may even have some time to try it in a few years.
