Puna, everything changed when the lava erupted in Leilani and began to flow like rivers to the ocean. And the lava may not stop flowing in our lifetime.
As individuals, as community, many of us stepped up to assist where we could. We came together as communities serving communities in need -- Pu'uhona o Puna -- Ikaika, Gilbert, Ashley and many others -- leading by example.
This is a State of Emergency, as a Puna resident, tax payer, community leader, and candidate -- I was hopeful that the Mayor would lead by example -- to execute emergency orders -- to reverse the January 2018 County Admin salary increases totaling 1.3 million and to repeal the 2% of property taxes for purchase of County/Public lands per year (about 6 million dollars) -- to lead by example and cut from the top in preparation for deficit spending -- but NO. In two months deficit spending totaled over 5 million dollars and then County Council moved forward raising taxes (GET .25%) Mismanagement and higher taxes!
We need a change -- we need new leadership in County Council -- and we need it now!

Ric Wirick (Why Rick), I was asked at the recent Puna District candidate forum what should be done concerning the rebuilding of infrastructure lost in the recent lava flow. I responded that the flow has not stopped, and it may not stop for decades. We need to take the necessary time to review the overall situation, to regroup and look carefully at our plans for the new future of Puna. We should also learn from our mistakes and not just repeat them.
One solution is Community based sustainable agriculture. We could learn from those that came before us and get back to the future.
I am a worker, self-reliant farmer, small horticultural business owner, community leader and living off-the-grid. Puna is my home and this is where I will take my last breath.
I know we can be the change, and I know working together we can become a food independent island-community. Farmers, ranchers, hunters and fishing communities coming together -- it is our right and responsibility. Mahalo

Mr. Wirick, we have just lost thousands of acres of farmland and don't know how much more will be taken. People need homes. Our businesses are suffering. Community based agriculture sounds great, sure. But what about our immediate problems? Should we build a new subdivision or use the many vacant lots that are available? How will community based agriculture help the restaurants and retail shops that are struggling due to lack of tourists? How do you help the many farmers who have lost their land? What are your proposals for a lava viewing site? How about some news we can use, please.
Certainty will be the death of us.

If I didn't know better, it sounds very nostalgic for the days of those of us who moved here in the 'way-back-when' time, before phytophthera, ringspot, coqui, fire ants, ratlung, and lots of other fungal and bacterial diseases that I don't want to try to spell this late at night. ( It also says something about the timewarp of parts of OLE. )
I've commented before about when the ag-people where outnumbered by those who chose not to sweat in the tropical sun to earn their livelihood.
It seems that it would be a better choice to have someone who represents those who are actually living here now.

"…I’ve been told that Ashley reports to Bill Walter the same way Trump reports to Vladimir Putin…"
First, Trump looks and sounds guilty as hell, but Mueller hasn't filed his report yet so...conjecture at best.
Second…Really? "Ashley reports to Bill. " Who exactly told you this?
I believe you made this up to support your preference in candidates. I believe your motivations got in the way of your ethics, you then either made up this lie or you chose to pass one along without vetting it. I know both Bill and Ashley, they are both very active in our community. ( BTW:I know Eileen as well). Ashley is nobody's tool and Bill is no puppeteer. I call BS on this lie before it becomes a canard.
These types of posts are a poor reflection on both the poster and the forum.
I didn’t make anything up. That’s what I was told. But no, I’m not going to out that person just to satisfy your delicate sensibilities. This is a free-wheeling forum, so I made my points with a bit of flair. And so yeah, I guess you can call me a liar if you like. All’’s fair, as they say... but I don’t take kindly to being called a liar. I don’t owe you an explanation, nor—any more—do I owe you courtesy. I reserve courtesy for those who show it in kind. So you and I are done.

To All:
I think we are seeing conflict between different forms
of development.
I think it is that simple.
Who benefits and why?
Some heavy research and analysis is needed.
For example: Looks like a defacto alliance of the
"keep it country" types and, say, WH Shipman.
Neither wants more than controlled, limited development.
Just making an observation here.
The reasons for 2 different groups arriving at the objectively
same position may be dissimilar, but the same result achieved.

Just a quick note of clarification: the comment by 'PunaPerson' in the HTH article is not me. I've used my moniker on PW for several years, and have also used it on several other sites. I've no idea how long this other person has been using the similar name.
