Saw my first whale today!! Spouting about the same distance as the one Carey saw. First saw him poke his head up...then a little further north he spouted twice and went under...I had binoculars so saw him dive down and saw his hump...THEN THE FLUKES!

He did that two more times before I couldn't see him anymore...about 5pm today off Kahakai. Smile))))

ahhh what beautiful creatures they are. So big in size, yet gentle in nature.

Growing up in Lahaina I have seen my fair share of Humpbacks over the years. As a matter of fact, 'Greenpeace', had set up shop on Maui in the early 70's to do reseach on these beautiful creatures. At the time I was working on a commercial boat(Windjammers). We did Sunday "whale Watching tours",during the season. Also during this time(70's) Humpbacks were getting injured on a regular basis due to the Interisland Hydro Boats running between islands. These boats were hitting the humpbacks all the time....it was truly heart breaking! Lucky for us "Humpback Whale Lovers", the Interisland Hydro Boats didn't even last a year in business. They broke down way to often due to hitting 'Humpbacks Whales', between Maui & Molokai.

During this time that Greenpeace was doing their Humpback thing. I became pretty good friends with the then director of Greenpeace of Maui Operations. With all the time I personally in the make their project happen. They rewarded me one Sunday with an invitation to go swim with the Humpbacks off shore from Lahaina. They had did some swimming before with the Humpbacks the week earlier, and filmed it for 'National Geographic'.

I'll be the first to say, being up close to a Humpback is awesome...as long as he doesn't blow his spout...which smells like an old nasty "sea fart"!

Damn, I use to have photos of that day in the water. But over time, mixed with my travels I must have lost my pics, which is terrible cause now I depend on an old memory that filled with plenty of smoke if you know what I mean?

Thank you for that. What an honor I think it would be to be included in that experience.

I also saw my first whale of the season yesterday just offshore here in Kapoho Beach Lots. I was talking on the phone and just staring out the window...when...lo and behold...a full breach!! The aftersplash must have been at least 50 feet in the air. I ended the phone call and ran and got my spotting scope focused on him. For the next 15 minutes I watched him roll around, do tail slaps and smack his flippers on the water. What a clown!!

WOW! Sounds like he really put on a show for ya! I just may have to head down to the lighthouse...I've heard from a few sources that's a good place to see 'em.
