The term has been around for a long time - since the first Pu'u O'o flows began entering the ocean. It is a combo-word like vog (volcanic smog). Laze was made up from Lava Haze.

And realize that the plume generated by the lave going into the ocean does have some hazards. When the lava heats and boils seawater some of the salts that form thermally decompose to form hydrochloric acid. It won't cause instant death, but it will burn your skin and, I would imagine, if it got into your eyes, it would be pretty painful.
