I flew out of Hilo for a late night connection in HNL two weeks ago and the HawaiianAir pilot flew up to Kapoho and back down for both sides of the plane to see. I have never been keen to see active lava for fear Pele would feel compelled for a reciprocal visit, but that was incredible. Stunning. Awesome. Don't know if pilots are all doing that or if my flight was a one-off.

I just booked a helicopter flight with safari for $180 kamaaina rate. That was the cheapest I found.

A couple hundred yards up Huina Road in Kurtistown yields a semi-decent view. You would thinks there might be a closer one, but I haven't come across one.
