What Carrie mentioned is a classic case of facts turning into fiction, but it’s a classic case of how the fiction produces an automatic ignoring of facts. So although the exact scenario isn’t completely true (it’s not a hoax, just a mistaken understanding of the facts) there are secondary facts everyone needs to be aware of.

Although this directory is an opt in, and is simply a directory assistance directory not sold to telemarketers, and telemarketers are prohibited from auto calling cell phones, that does not mean your cell phone can’t be called by telemarketers.

If you gave permission to be called, you gave permission so no violation of any rules occurred. Unbeknownst to most people, the rules that apply to written permission is completely different than electronic or expressed permission.

How many people have read the privacy policies or terms of use policies from on-line entities? You order a product on-line, or register a product on-line, or responded to something on-line, and they asked for your phone number. If you used your cell number and their policy is that by providing it you are authorizing the company to sell or provide your information to other vendors that have products or services that may be of interest to you, you actually gave permission. Unless that number appears on the Do-Not-Call list, they have every right to call you. And that number can be sold or given to other vendors.

So, although your cell number isn’t going to be freely used by every telemarketer based on this cell phone 411 directory; it should be a wake-up call to people who give out their cell phone number without knowing how their number can be used.

I give them the number to my local IRS office works well - I never get any junk calls, kills two birds with one stone...
