Looking for a GOOD lava zone map
#1
Anyone know of a better one than the one USGS has? It would be nice to have an "overlay" for Google "Earth" but I haven't found one yet.
Another question: Has Crater Rim Drive been reopened?

Crater rim has not reopened.... The amount of ash is still high in the former (it isn't gone, just not used) parking area and rim drive by the former (it is gone) hula platform.... They have had a few projectiles that have also made it close to the lot (& rim drive)
You can usually go all the way to Jagger observatory, almost always to KMC... and go the east route to Chain of Craters...

A really great resource for geologic substrates (soils & such) that gives the substrate ages (& last flow eras..)on the island is the USGS map, (there is a wall paper sized up at the Geology Dept at the University) the digital form (big file - 9.8mb)is at:
http://pubs.usgs.gov/ds/2005/144/images_plots/bimp.pdf
If you want to check out other areas of the country, start at:

Carey - Nice to meet you tonight.

There is the county data books map however, I believe they got that from the USGS.

However, if you are using Google earth... you should be able to get a good overlay here:

http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/hazards/lavazones...dZones.kmz

"This Volcano Watch article announces the release of the first Google Earth mapping file made available by HVO: one that displays lava flow hazard zones for the County of Hawaii on the Google Earth base. If you can find your house or even your neighborhood on Google Earth, you’ll be able to use this overlay to see what Lava Flow Hazard Zone you are in"

Lower your expectations and be ready for anything.
