Choice of tree landscaping on raw lava

Chas, I meant to ask you what your objection to Ironwood is.

Close to a house it can clog up the gutters. It's non native, invasive, and "not recommended for introduction in Hawaii" (little late for that I guess) according to the Hawaii Forestry Extension.

Although I must admit, I love walking through MacKenzie and other areas where it has taken over. And, since it seems to be everywhere, it is part of my memories of Hawaii from the time I started coming here.

That's really interesting about the Uluhe. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get that to grow on my property. Plus, the area in question is in full sun, and it seems like it wouldn't grow there anyway(?)

Thanks for the ironwood explanation. I also love the trees at Mackenzie but I didn't realize they were invasive. Our uluhe grows in mostly full sun, some dappled shade.
Certainty will be the death of us.

Interesting. Being a fern I assumed it liked shade.

I'm noodling over building another one on the lava.

You guys hate Wedilia too? We had a huge patch of it at my house, deliberately. All the plants I remember from my childhood on Oahu seem to be horrible weeds.
I would really love to hear about living in your dome:  pros, cons, surprises, etc.  I think they are interesting shapes for the island.

Maybe you could start a separate thread on that.

One more thought: If a possibility you will have pigs visit at any time, consider fencing your bananas, monstera and anything else they will destroy. They will leave citrus alone. Plus one for jaboticaba, jackfruit. I like Samoan coconut mo betta.
