Medicare is that all that you got?

Anybody have a extra knee that they aren’t using anymore? I need one that will support 210 lbs and last for about the next 15 years or so.

Seriously, I have been to the bone guys and X-rays show that my left knee has had enough abuse thru the last 65 years and refuses to function properly any longer. It’s telling me that it is on strike and will not work at all or quit altogether. Since my retirement in July when I turned 65 the only insurance that I have is Medicare and that may not be enough. It seems that the Doc’s want an arm and a leg in exchange for a knee replacement. I haven’t been able to find a Orthopedic Doc here on this island and could use someone’s help. A referral to a GOOD Orthopedic guy on this island could save me some time.

Thanks

Liza Maniquis-Smigel is not a surgeon but is an excellent orthopedic doc for diagnosis, pain management, and some interesting alternative therapies, and takes Medicare.
But you have to be referred by your primary care doctor for her to see you.

Not a Medicare requirement for referral, just most specialists here will not do a new patient intake without a referral from PCP.

This is her website:

I was referred to her after being in a car accident last year.

If you have traditional Medicare, you might want to explore Secure Horizons the Medicare PPO (other than Kaiser) for the Big Island. It has no annual deductible, no deductible on the prescription plan, some free "wellness" benefits including free classes at the YMCA, and fixed copays for in network.

One big advantage is it has a $50 fixed copay on an ER visit to Hilo Hospital, whereas with regular Medicare that will cost you whatever Medicare doesn't pay and they refuse to write off.

What you you need is quality universal health care, like they have in Canada. Get well soon.

AARP medicare supplement has worked very well for us and does not cost and arm and a leg.
