Using a generator
#1
Our home still isn't finaled and our used to be wonderful neighbors who we have been using some power and sharing the electric bill informed us that on 8-23 they will no longer let us. We probably will need to try to use a generator so please those with experience come forward. We have tried to get temporary permanent service but they won't do it so we are stuck. We can borrow one from a friend but is there good, bad ways to use one?

Aloha Nancy I brought forward a thread on "which generator to buy" on the PunaWeb forum. Lots of great info there for you, sorry to hear of your situation. Could we ask why Helco won't light you up?

Nancy - I got a Chinese brand named ProForce at Walmart for something like $390. No real complaints. Actually not too noisy. And you have been by my site to know it has had more than a bit of use. It is quite heavy. Don't know if WalMart still has them any more. It is NOT a Honda, but it seems to do the job and was cheaper. I could find no reviews about this generator on the internet. I figured if I didn't like it I would find out quickly and use WalMatr's guarantee. All I can say is that to this point, I've been satisfied and would buy it again.

If interested in seeing it, stop by when you see my truck at the lot.

Thanks joe will come check it out.

That doesnt exactly make sense.... typically they will come and hook it up and charge you as "temp" power but hook it up as final....

Maybe you should check back with a another person at Helco...

Lek & I waited almost until the end to get our power hooked up.The house was built totally by generator power.HELCO was a force to be reckoned with, but I found one employee there that is very caring and helpful. He really helped us get our permanent temporary. His name is Clayton Nishiura and phone is 969-0331.Hours for him are 7-3:30.
We are supposed to get our final electrical and building inspections tomorrow. The house is done.SmileSmileSmile!!!!!!

Forget Helco, put in a bank of solar panels, an inverter and have your generator only fill in when the sun doesn't shine as much! Save you tons on your electric bills. Now, HA (Hawaiian Electric and Hawaii Electric) is a really good stock to own, they pay nice dividends!

For generators, if you are buying one to keep, then a nice Honda might be the way to go, they are very quiet, but very desirable, so put it in a secure place. Propane powered generators are nice, too. How big of a generator do you need? If you are running electronics and such, you may want to find a generator with at least a modified sine wave output, too, so controls (like on your washing machine) and such will run better.

A hui hou,
Cathy
