Are you aware of the Fern Acres yahoo group?

What little mention of crime I've seen is standard rural Hawaii stuff. You can join the group and ask, or read through the back messages.

If you're in the front half or so of Plumeria, you can get cable internet. That was my big question about Fern Acres, but I ended up buying further up the mountain. Now to get something built!

Well they just caught a fugitive from California living ONE Block away from Plumeria on Lehua Ave.

....Big Island police seized 704 marijuana plants from a greenhouse in a warrant search of his Fern Acres subdivision residence on Lehua Road has been charged with commercial promotion of marijuana, promoting a detrimental drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and three firearm offenses....

Here's a page put out by Jeff Spaur, a Puna Remax agent who's been around for awhile. It includes crime statistics. Most crimes are listed as well under the national average, but risk of rape is 130 + percent of the national. I don't know why.

Personally I'm not a statistically-oriented type. I figure it either happens to you or someone close to you, or a neighbor you know -- in which case it overwhelms your bit of the world, or it doesn't, in which case all seems well and worries seem overkill.

Having stayed in Fern Acres numerous times we enjoyed our stay. However when considering lot size, layout and putting a home in we balked.

Fern Acres lots 100 wide 800 long, 15 foot set backs on each side of the 100 foot frontage. People tend to build up front and the back of the property isn't used much. Called spaghetti lots and would be useful for some applications I suppose.

Good hunting to you!

I looked at the demographics listed by KathyH. Thanks for the resource. The demos listing rape at 130+ was for Keaau. It is 98 for Mt. View. There were listed by zip code. I say this because as a woman, it made me feel better, lol.

Zip code listing doesnt mean much really. Most of south lower Puna is 96778 (Pahoa) even though the location may be 0-15 miles apart.

Numbers can be deceiving. Percentages of what population bases?

The site above gives a lot of information, don't remember how current it is but is based on census info I believe. Worth rummaging through. Sort by zip, large cities and small city populations. Interesting info.
