Which grass is drought tolerant?
#1
Looking to find a draught tolerant/low maintenance grass that can survive some of our dry spells.

In previous posts the following grasses have been mentioned:
Carpet grass, wide & coarse blades
centipede grass, creeping
Zoysia, grown in plugs
Seashore paspalum, what we have in our planted lawn, and my favorite. very low maintenance and fine blades. If you don't walk on it, it puffs & bubbles, & can tolersate salt water. Mella provided this link for this grass:

You may also look at planted lots (like a botanical garden) have seen them in small & large lots.
Just remember that you will have 12 months of hyper active growing on anything planted.

Drought? What drought? My impression is that you might have more problems keeping grass under control with many of the extant species. But I really don't know much about grass, or if any of them has trouble with drier times.

I find grasses that are already growing in my area that have a growth habit I like and encourage those to grow. Putting tufts of them around and pulling the other types out will eventually end up with a prevelance of the type of grass you like.

There are also different types of grasses for different parts of the yard. The dark "dragon's beard" mondo grass does really well in rocks and makes a good mat near the base of trees. We have some sort of zoysia which does well in larger flat areas. There is some sort of centipede grass which grows under the Norfolk pine, etc. You may want more than one type of grass.
