Having just moved into HPP, I am looking at the best way to trim walkway paths in our property. The previous owner had one of those DR Trimmers and thought it was the best tool for the job. I was wondering what the rest of you think. It will be used mainly for 3' paths in the yard, and the edges along the property. Thanks for your responses.

What brand do people use when doing their own weed wacking?
Any suggested brands to purchase that do a good job in keeping the jungle back? Something that will be hearty enough to last a lifetime, or a few years? Mahalos plenty.

We purchased a new weedwacker several months ago after having struggled with cheap ones for years. We purchased a Shindaiwa from Tex's in Hilo. It's been reliable, steady and good to use. Did the same thing when crappy chainsaws kept dying -- got a Stihl from Garden Exchange, and have been happy campers. Both are quality pieces of equipment. Tex's has really knowledgeable folks on the Shindaiwas, and Garden Exchange has a great sales/repair staff.
Don't go cheap -- you'll pay more in the long run.

Thanks for the replies so far. I do have a Shindaiwa and Stihl models. I was just wondering if anyone uses something like the DR Trimmers. Thank you again for your responses.

We do also own a DR mower -- great machine that deals well with our rough terrain. However, we've not used the string trimmer head on it, as we've been quite satisfied with the blade. We got the extra-heavy-duty blade. It's been working hard for 3 years, with only one repair. Again, a quality machine, and the DR folks came through with info and parts.

Thank you Jane for your reply. Did you have to mail order it? Where did you get it repaired? Thanks!

We did mail-order the DR from the mainland, so it was pretty cumbersome process as it ships in a very large crate that had to be delivered by a trucking company. Took about a month or more to get it.
The problem was with a knob that got rusted and no longer worked. We contacted the DR folks, and they shipped the replacement knob immediately, and we replaced it ourselves.
All in all, a very satisfactory piece of equipment.
