Do we have the demographics for more big retail stores? This island has a fairly limited population and a new store can't draw in more population from a neighboring state. With the downturn in tourism, the population that we do have won't be out buying many new electronics so it would have been pretty foolish for Circuit City to open a new store.
One of the reasons we still have the amount of mom-n-pop shops that we do on this island is because of the limited population. You can't get a big box retail outlet without enough people buying stuff for them to bring in it in large amounts. Which is why there is only one Costco since folks from the whole island will trek over to it so they don't need to open another one. Same with K-Mart. I wouldn't be surprised for Wally's World to consolidate into one store if the downturn gets much deeper.
