The "grafitti" on the leeward side

I was curious about the history - how it all started. How *did* it start? Can anyone pick up some corals and "be creative" or are there restrictions?

I think that it is unregulated and simply done by people. A few years back Pepsi Corp was having a big event and caught some heavy flack for putting the Pepsi logo along the road on coral. People didn't like that. It did not last long.

Assume the best and ask questions.

I saw a "Kansas City Chiefs*" logo last March!

*Football - Don't ask me about the Chiefs - it's too embarrasing

There are no restrictions. Mostly done by tourists. Most people recycle from other people's work. It has been going on a long time but I'm not sure when or why it started.

When I was 4 or 5 years old, I remember driving by and seeing all of the people's names. This was almost 30 years ago.

Blame it on the Ironman competition and their fans. It goes pretty far back to the first few competitions. Fans were spray painting competitors names on the road with spray paint. The paint lasted for a very long time after the competition and was ugly and giving the Ironman a bad rap. A committee was formed to try and solve the dilemma and came up with chalk indorsement. Chalk could be used instead of paint making it acceptable.

Some unknown creative thinker named [Terry Lentz] went to the beach one day and loaded his car with coral and made a sign that said POST NO BILLS on the black lava. People that was over thirty years ago, so that ends the mystery.

The Logo’s that have been posted have been done by a few pretty creative artist for a fee and is still going on today. Some large companies pay for logo placement when holding a convention here on the big island.

One tourist looks to the other and says, "COOL! let's make one too! Only further down the road so it stands out more..." Later on they end up moving here and after being here for ten years or so they look out over the grafitti and think, "dumb tourists!"
Someone tried starting it up saddle road, I now have a large pile of white coral in my yard and saddle road still looks nice.
