Most discussion I've heard is RT is usually cheaper than one-way, sometimes significantly. I think the airlines like having those unused seats come available for someone else to pay again.

That's a good change fee too if you hold onto a ticket for use at a later time - $100 most airlines - some more. United's at $50 is a good one, actually.
That's a dang good price for a RT ticket - $412...wow. Hard to find those these days.

Last year when ATA & Aloha bellied up during Merrie Monarch week, we had a friend in from Chicago.... ticketed to leave Hilo on ATA the day after they shut down.... ie, Friday of Merrie Monarch... believe it or not, we spent a couple of hours of computer search & got her RT tickets to Chicago (from Kona) for $550 leaving on that Monday...., 1-ways were all coming in around $1300. She was able to get her credit card to reimburse the ATA charge (she had paid $800 for her RT tickets, so she got $400) her return was in Sept, and she asked for an extension & is planning to return this spring... (& luckily we were able to get MM tickets for her!)

Is it possible at all to sell the return ticket to someone else?

great tips from chuysmom, love it!
Hope, some airlines are all about round trips, and United is one of them.
Hawaiian Air is all priced one way. You do not save on a round trip with Hawaiian, as each segment is priced and a round trip is just two segments.
Have you looked around for another airline than United? Where are you flying from?
I have not seen United with the best fares for a long time now.
I don't know when you're flying, but right now Hawaiian is showing about $380 one way LAX--ITO and $480 SAN to ITO. Compared to United at $833 for the same dates.

Hawaiian has the best prices, but she wants a direct flight to KOA because of her dog. I think United is the only choice for that regardless, at least that is what we found. All of Hawaiian flights have layovers of several hours in Honolulu.

Kathy,United is the only Airline Kona Vet Services has the agreement with to process the animals (after you submit the perwork in advance to Hoholulu).
I think the United simply take advantage of this. No competition.Nothing we can do about it.

I see. Not having been following all the topics, and this topic not mentioning the pet issue, I wasn't aware. Well then, you are stuck with an airline that doesn't want to sell one way tickets, and I would probably buy a round trip booked with a return at some date you think you MIGHT want a visit.
Then if you use that return, or change it, you can fly Hawaiian the other direction.
btw, the layovers at HNL are not hours and hours. There are flights over here throughout the day. My son is just landing in HNL coming in from Oakland as I type, and will be on an inter-island in about the time it takes him to get to the other terminal.
Just saying, if a pet weren't involved, it's not that bad coming through HNL.
