Competition for weekly Farm Markets
#21
One day we were in the Walmart Parking lot and it was a day that we had cruise ship in town. There was a white van driving around the entrance to the store that had a hand made sign taped to it with duct tape... "Walmart Jitney to Cruise Dock $2 pp".

I really could not believe my eyes... so you come to Hawaii/Hilo to go to a friggin WALMART? What a shame... real shame. My heart aches for what they were missing!

I wonder how much it cost to setup a stand outside of WalMart, where there are tons of passerbys(is that a word?).

Thanks for the welcome Kani. Nellie should be on her way now!

Regarding Kinoole Street Farmer's Market... we went again on Saturday, got there at 9 am. There were about 12 vendors. Many were selling plants. There was one baker. We bought a Couqui Trap from one plant seller. Hamakua Springs has the largest booth with the most variety and by 9 am they had sold out of a lot of things already. So, we went to the Hilo Market and found the other things we needed. As we were leaving the market, there was a guy with a hot dog cart and two big umbrellas and he had a sign that said "World's Best Cheeseburgers". We talked to him and bought 2 burgers. He cooks them on a gas grill and they were VERY good burgers. He uses top quality meats and has what he calls, "Condiment World" a big tub of condiments on ice.

The real reason we need to support Kinoole Street is that it is 100% Hawaiian grown, most things come within a few miles of Hilo. Even though we have to go to another market to suppliment, our support of this local market is really important.

adam79: the gal up at the winery said that sometimes the volcano market is over by 830am. we'll never make it to that one as it takes a while to get mom out and about.

regarding hot dog carts: we used to own two franchised locations at the pearl harbor commissary and exchange and did farely well. when rimpac came in, some of the men/women would ask us to take them into waikiki after we closed down and they were the ones who offered about $10 bucks/person. we had a big truck back then and they all road in the bed.

devaney: kino'ole sold out by 9am, too?! well, we ended up at the kea'au village market across from ace hardware to get some stuff. that lady is there every day. for sure not all her produce is locally grown. got a nice bag of sprouts, but should be growing my own.

hawaiiboundnelli is on her way today, yes? in a few short hours?

Kini'ole wasn't completely sold out at 9, there were 5 unripe tomatoes and some salad greens at Hamakua Springs Booth and the baker had some bread... but if you were doing your weekly shopping... you would call them sold out.
