Car rental .... cheaper than airport?
#1
Just wondering if anyone has a referrence for a good place to rent a car for a couple of days. Trying to keep costs down, if possible and avoid the airport. Mahalo.

Aloha, Holly. Enterprise has a location off-airport on Kanoelehua in Hilo. They have a reputation for being inexpensive on the mainland, and I have used them there and found the experience to be good all around. Low prices and decent cars. I have no experience with the local outlet, though. Harper Rentals is a local off-airport outfit, but I think they specialize in trucks and four wheel drive. Perhaps other forum members know of some other possibilities.

We used http://www.discounthawaiicarrental.com

We rented a Jeep Wrangler for a week and paid $315 total. It was from Thrifty at the airport. If we had just gone through Thrifty, it would have been $365 or so.

Hope this helps!

P.S. - No extra charge for a second driver, either!

We used the Hilo Enterprise when our car was in the shop. They were good.
They'll pick you up and drop you off. Nice folks.

Priceline.com. Nobody beats their prices. I just rented a mid-size car for four days @19/day.

I get great deals at alamo.com If you go to the "hot deals" section they have a header for a pre-payment option. Another money saver is to reserve the smallest vehicle you would be comfortable with, most times they bump you up for free.
