After living in Puna for four years we had to leave in Feb 08 to help out a daughter who lost her husband and was left with no insurance and three little girls. I have been spending most of my time since in Colorado Springs helping daughter in her office and squeezing my grandkids. The only thing wrong with paradise is that nine of our ten grandkids live on the mainland from Oregon to upstate New York. We have missed the Island and Puna to the point of tears and now things are kind of smoothing out here we are finally coming home to our previously cleared, now overgrown lot in Hawaiian Acres. I will never bellyache about the Coquis, Roosters, and barking dogs since I won't have to listen to traffic, sirens, and greedy whiners which are quite prolific here. I have been lurking here on this site since I have been off island and want to thank every member for helping me stay up to date and sane with the news of the Island

We too had our plans derailed in 2005. So yes our lot in Mountainview is now overgrown up to the eyeballs! When I first saw how overgrown the acre had become, I was so down hearted. My husband said it would take a small tractor all of about 10 minutes to put it back in order as there are no structures!

I had a half an acre cleared with hedge clippers and a pitchfork, composted all the debris for soil. Used to have around 1500 sf in vegetable gardens. Now I guess I'll have loads of greenwaste for the new compost heaps since I'm sure all the beds are now solid roots and will require composting all over again. Small price to pay though for living in paradise. I'm looking forward to the challenges and the rewards.

Yes, Mangoman, there is probably quite a few of us with one foot on the mainland and one foot on Hawaii (or better our hearts are in both places) and most times, it is because of family. Glad to hear you are getting to make it back!
