Man vs. Food - blueberries?
#1
Just watched the Man vs. Food episode filmed on O'ahu. The thing that jumped out at me was the mention that the bluberries (in and on the 4-pound stack of pancakes he was trying to eat) were locally grown. I searched here for bluberries and found a few posts from this spring re high-bush bluberries from Walmart. Am curious to know how they're doing. Would love to get a bush or two next spring and try them here in upper HPP if they've proved successful in Puna. Blueberry progress report anyone? Mahalo.

use it up, wear it out, make it do, do without
I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.

Lin,

Check with Rosette's -- Donna was talking about trying them again. Caution, though.. most blueberries require chilling, so growing them in HPP is less likely to work unless you can get a variety that doesn't require that. I know there is a planned commercial growing operation set for Volcano. Donna's experience in the past was that they did well the first year, but mostly because they were received in the spring and had undergone chilling on the mainland.

That said, bring 'em on!!!! Pancakes, muffins, cereal....

I am growing blueberries. I got them from Walmart. High bush. I just got them in spring and have already had a handful of blueberries. I am growing them in a pot. You just have to make sure to pick them before the birds do. Oh. I am in HPP too!

"Misty" and "Sharpblue" are two low chill varieties which should do well around here.

I asked the farmer across from me about planting blueberries and he said "the birds like them". I guess all the folks that have tried to grow them commercially have had better luck feeding the birds than harvesting the berries.

Yes, bird netting is a must with blueberries. We harvest about 400lbs of blue berries a year on our little farm in WA and putting on/taking off the netting each year is a ritual. Some birds still get under and in the nets no matter what. One year, early on, I thought I'd try to see just how bad it was without netting... big mistake... we harvested about half of the normal.
Enjoy the day! Ann
