Twas the night before Christmas - pidgin style
#1
All,

I used to hear this on the local radio stations quite often around Christmas; the pidgin version of "Twas the night before Christmas". The narrator was male but I've not heard it much recently although that might be because I've not had the radio on too much.

Does anyone know what I might be talking about and if there's a CD or album with the story on it? There are several text versions of the pidgin story on the web, but I haven't found the album I heard on the radio.

Any tips or clues would be very much appreciated. I have no idea who the narrator was except it sounded very much like a local guy.

Thanks,
Tom

There are a few different versions, two versions you hear are "Da Night Befo' Christmas" — Kathy Collins and "Christmas Lu`au" — Richard Ho`opi`i and Wilmont Kahaiali`i. "Christmas Lu'au" is probably the more popular version of the pidgin "Night Before Christmas".

This is a great resource for many different Hawaiian recordings:

Here is a version but no author credit.

Laughing_girl - thanks for that and it's exactly the pidgin story I'm after, except I'm trying to find the audio version. I haven't had a chance to visit the stores yet to find Carey's recommendations, but I hope to this weekend. It's still a fun read though, so thank you!

Hubbie corrected me - the "Christmas Lu'ua" based on 'night before Christmas' is with Bernard Kalua (the Ho'opi'i recording is not the same song, more 50's style Hawaiian... sorry!), and is available on a couple of recordings, a recent one is on the recording "Hawaiian Style Christmas". Kathy Collins is on the recording "Moonbows for Christmas"

Both recordings have audio sampling on the web.

Hubbie is the true AV geek, I knew we had the songs & pulled the Moonbows CD & it had both, but it had the wrong "Christmas Lu'ua"....
