Planting for Privacy
#11

Thanks Kathy, I was a little more tongue in cheek, because I like flowers. I have to say your suggestions are really thoughtful and informational. When I finally sell my house in WA I will dig it out of the archives to start my own garden. Someone is coming Tuesday to look at my house, and I can only hope ......

radiopeg, if you can't trust a bamboo it's because you haven't studied the difference between running and clumping and you only know running.

Radiopeg we are in the same boat (trying to sell homes and move) and for what it is worth I got a chuckle out of your bamboo trust comment. :-)

Thanks, all, for the great advice! Carey, I'll be in touch when we're at a point where it makes sense to start planting. We love cuttings Smile

And Kathy - you should rent yourself out as a landscaping consultant!

Thanks Rich, but my process has a lot of trial and error so I dunno if people would want to pay for that! ;-)

Blake do you have any photos of this to share?

Also anyone I need a few photos of Kehena beach (just landscape) if you would share with me for a business card perhaps. Thanks!

Gosh Kathy I really like the variety in your photos snd the textural differences. The pineapples and poinsettias really looked good with those gray palm trunks. You are not only a landscape queen, but an ace photographer. I promise, I will never say a bad word about "bamboo" in general. Peggy

This is a good price on arecas in pots on craigslist.

That sounds like a good buy. However, I will say this from having worked with arecas. It is not the top growth that provides the value when you buy the palm. It is the size of the root ball that governs the vigor of the plant in producing its new growth. I started with either 10 or 15 gallon rootbound palms and they exploded into a true privacy screen very fast. The same is true of bamboo. It's all about what's in the pot, the amount of rhizome development, not what you see on top - because that what governs the next round of shoots. Three gallons is small and is going to take awhile to get there.
