raising a calf ???
#1
I have a 1/3 acre barb wire fenced pasture that I'm having to mow. I can't think of what to put in it - wire too big for sheep; want to keep pasture, so no fruit trees or garden; don't want it going wild, I'm stymied about what to do w/ it. I thought maybe a calf weener; any suggestions?

It is considered a bit inhumane to place a herd animal like a young weened steer into pasture alone. Think in terms of a pair of animals at least. You may well find someone who is in need of some pasturage though 1/3 acre is rather small.
Assume the best and ask questions.

If you try goats you will end up needing to replace the fencing for the entire pasture because just barbed wire will NOT keep them in. Do you have a neighbor with grazing animals who might be willing to bring them over for a week at a time? It could give their pasture a rest and keep your grass down. Unfortunately, 1/3 of an acre is a whole lot to mow and yet is too little land to pasture most animals on a permanent basis.
