Bamboo
#1
I use lots of bamboo poles in my garden, the problem is that it keeps rotting away no matter how much i treat it. Any suggestions?

I was told by a local that you have to stick the cut end into a bucket with about 25% solution of bleach and water. Do this be for you cut the tops off and the bamboo will suck the solution up and keep it from rotting. Kills any of the nasties that are living in and on the bamboo! So I was told!

Leroy,
What do you use to treat the bamboo?
I use copper naphthenate as a dip (for a couple days) here in Louisiana and it makes a big difference. I do not know if it is sold in Hawaii. It is not that easy to find here.

An old post mentioned scorching them with an oxy torch set on 'sooty flame,' right after they were cut. I haven't tried it yet.

If you have bamboo growing on your property then just get new bamboo poles to replace the rotted ones. Probably easier than trying to treat a bamboo especially if they are just used for bean trellis or something else simple to replace.

It depends on the bamboo variety. Bambusa Vulgaris, which many of us have in our backyards, is particularly prone to getting muched by powder post beetles. Many varieties aren't. Have you tried the Boucherie method for treatment? It's actually a fairly easy system to set up.

There is timber bamboo and non-timber, just as there is bamboo that makes tasty bamboo shoots and other varieties not.

Quindembo's catalog identifies the bamboo good for timber - and it's available here on the island. That yellow running bamboo that grows out of control here is super fast to rot.
