Glen goes to Puna (Part 2)
#1
I declined the beer, with regret. I was so impressed with the aloha of my host, though. He was justifiably proud of his house and it was kind of him to share it with me. If you ever get a chance, do go see it. Anyway, I drove over to Pahoa where I met John Dirgo, and David for the first time. Two charmers, to be sure. As I will explain later, John was the most professional and nicely restrained real estate agent I have ever worked with. He was like an incredible waiter at a very high end restaurant – there when you needed him and quietly in the background when you didn’t. John and I arranged to get together the next day after I gave John my all-over-the-map wish list. I wasn’t sure what to think about Pahoa. The architecture makes it look like old Westerns, so the wild west aspect is definitely there. There are a lot of people hanging out not doing anything in particular, which is what I would like to do someday. Most of the people in the grocery store seemed stoned, or at least to be walking in a dream. I would like to walk in a dream someday.

When I left the grocery store, someone attempted to run me down in their car. That detracted from the dreaminess I had been feeling. I had the feeling that if I had stood pat instead of diving out of the way, they would have caused me great bodily injury.

I left Pahoa and drove down to Kapoho to the Rabbit and Tortoise, my new accomodation. I am pretty sure I skinned up the rental car getting into the small, lava lined parking space. The Rabbit and Tortoise (or Dragon?) is amazing because it has its own private tidepool, which is as deep as a swimming pool. It is heated by Pele. I just hoped she wouldn’t crank up the controls suddenly while I was in it. And I went in it immediately. To the horror and disgust of any passing planes, I shed my swimsuit. The water was heavenly and warm and there were fish. Knowing that I was at the easternmost (or nearly so) point of Hawaii, I truly felt like I was at the end of the world. Above the tidepool was a profusion of jungley green, and the blue sky. I couldn’t believe my good fortune weather wise.

Got out, dressed and took a walk to see if I could find champagne pond. A lovely, wide-eyed woman asked me if I was lost and I told her I was looking for champagne pond. The next thing I knew, I was visiting another house with another very kind and informative escort. This house was also incredible, with its own tidepool and beach. It had a sweeping view of Kapoho Bay. The tradewinds seemed to be shoving pure warm oxygen straight down my throat. The rocky dead lava in Kapoho was somewhat unsettling to me (SOMETHING HAPPENED HERE), but I had to admit that from a purely aesthetic point of view, it was hard to beat black against deep blue. I really had trouble leaving that house, but at some point my host eased me out the gate and back into another form of irreality.

I found a pond, I am not sure which one it was, and had the incredible experience of snorkeling all alone in volcanically heated water, through layers of temperature which created eerie underwater distortions.

Went back to the place. As night descended on the Rabbit and Dungeon, I heard a chirp. One single chirp. Right outside my bedroom window was a coqui, in a tree, inches from the window. I learned that one coqui near your window can be more devastating than hundreds or even thousands that are within earshot, but far away from your window. There was more than one place to sleep at the Rabbit and Dragon so I simply relocated. But I can still hear the call of that one little coqui frog. I almost wanted to chop the tree down. I am quite sure that frog has been killed since.

At this point, because of the isolation of the place, I started to miss my boyfriend. I turned off all the lights. Then much to my dismay, I developed superpowers that enabled me to hear every teeny little sound. That was when I heard the sound on the deck. It sounded like footsteps. Very slowly, these footsteps seemed to be heading right toward me. [to be continued maybe].

This is too good. Its true, Glen, there's something about the air or environment here that sound really does carry ridiculous distances. Its not just you.

I can't wait to read about our adventures in the 2 houses we had to "break into" to show them to you, especially the Japanese-owned house. I still chuckle over the conversation we had leaving that place ("you are not respecting our ways!"Wink.

Hmmmmm. I wonder if he's going to put in that bit about me and the Speedo? Or God forbid, go into even more detail! LOL. Actually, I really love it, Glen.

Cheers,
