Re Volcano Nat'l Park Pass: If you are 62 or older, you can buy a lifetime pass to ALL the National Parks for only $10.00.
Admits a car load of people to any National Park and a number of other sites, such as Corp of Engineers damsites, etc.
Absolutely the best deal offered by our government!

Are there many campsites and are permits required?

I have made 3 overnight hikes in HVNP in the last six months, there was always some place that had space. I just stop in the day of my hike and get my free permit and that's it. Most of time I never see another person.

There are National, State and County campsites that do require permits
online links for county:
http://www.hawaii-county.com/parks/parks.htm
State:
http://www.hawaiistateparks.org/parks/hawaii/
National page for the state:
http://www.nps.gov/state/HI/

There are also some unofficial camping spots on public & private lands, but access & such (this term is being used to cover many different things that can occur when camping without permission) can be a major factor in encouraging everyone to get a permit...

Aloha,My heart keeps on echoing the tag line time and again : "If you get it. Share it ". In fact, such is the impact of the years spent at Hawaii till date, that I go on relishing the moments. Such a nostalgia dawns upon me that I remember the complete Hawaii sojourn with wonder. Thanks to the hospitality of the Puna people and specially http://www.captaincookresorts.com/site/P...ntals.aspx

Used to be a State Park cabin for rent in the town of Volcano, but I don't see it on the state park list. Was a great deal, anybody know what happened to it?

When was that? I moved there in 1994 and I don't think there was a state cabin then. What is now Niaulani (used by the Volcano Arts Center) used to be the state forestry cabin, and that's the only place I can think of that it might be. It was run-down when I got there though.
