The scary part is when it goes silent.

Any geologist will tell you that when a planet's volcanoes stop, the planet begins to die. About 10,000 days ago, my buddy and I hiked out about 3 miles from the "pizza hut" parking area to see the new volcano. We sat with our legs hanging over the ledge looking at the fledgling volcano and we smelled something funny. Our hair was burning. Time to go! about a year later it covered my beautiful land in Kalapana Gardens. Since then I've watched Pu'u O'o grow into a mountain. Somehow I can't quite explain, this puts everything in perspective for me. I love the volcanoes. Living anyplace else would be boring.
