Golly. I just realized I participated in hijacking this thread, which is supposed to be about "anything GOOD about Puna." I do have something to say on this subject, so maybe I should help refocus.
One of the things I like about Puna is the ease with which one can participate in community affairs. The politicians may drive me crazy and frustrate me to no end, but they will talk with me. (Whether they listen is another story, LOL.) Even some of my least favorite, who know I don't agree with them, will give me the respect of sharing some time to talk story with me. It takes surprisingly little effort to do this, by the way.
An upside to living in one of Puna's "substandard" and neglected subdivisions is the fact that we have to come up with our own means of problem solving. To accomplish this, there are any number of boards, committees, task forces, and neighborhood interest groups that beg for participants. While this might be seen by many as a hassle or simply a reason to whine, it can also be seen as an opportunity to know one's neighbors and get involved. I get a lot of satisfaction from working for a common cause with my neighbors here in HPP. Like dealing with the politicians, it can be infuriatingly frustrating, but when something is accomplished, it feels so good.
Like any community, this one can be fractious and argumentative, but there is a very real sense of community that I value very much.
Cheers,
Jerry

I'll give my two cents about puna. It's warm year round, it's cheap, it's quiet, and there are beaches nearby. It's far from perfect, and there are some problems, but on the whole it's better than most places i've been.
I will say this though, i think the OP mentioned she was a teacher in another thread. If what i'm hearing is true, good luck getting a job here. no many, if any opening. especially since the budget crisis stuff.
