boy, you have been through some serious crap, terracore! I have lived rural, suburban, and urban ... but never had urban neighbors THAT bad!
I really don't think you can sub any place name though. I mean, the point isn't that there are other places or worse places where neighbors can make life hell. While that is true, the point here is about making the right choices re moving to and living on the Big Island.
People come here to live rurally and escape the kind of city-centered life that you describe. They are then surprised to find some of the same issues found in the midst of blighted urban neighborhoods right in the midst of beautiful tropical neighborhoods that look like places for peaceful nature lovers to live.
You are right that a person can make a mistake anywhere and not catch the problems next door, but in few places will the lookers come with such optimism, such tendency to overlook the signs and red flags ... or perhaps there are no signs to see.
For that reason, this community can help prevent people from making mistakes that are very costly. Of course, those who come here while searching are responsible for whatever happens, their decision, no blame to the forum. I personally think that too much optimism and reliance on good karma can land a person in some sticky situations. I do believe in karma, but it's a long term proposition. In the short term, bad things can and do happen to good people.
PS. If you want to see some hairy neighbor tales, check out the "Neighbors From Hell" forum that is UK-based. Talk about the dark side of human nature!
