There was tragedy this morning in HPP. Two teenage kids on vacation with their parents were playing around on the rocks by the ocean with their backs to the water. A wave came up and swept them into the water. The girl was rescued by the helicopter that responded, but it was already too late for the boy. It was so sad to see a young person loose their life so unneccesarily. So, just a friendly reminder to everyone, PLEASE NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON THE OCEAN!I know that most of you know this already, but this morning was a grim reminder of just how powerful the ocean is, and I thought I'd send a reminder out to all my Punaweb friends.
Aloha,
Mark

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the reminder. The ocean is powerful and the wave patterns are so unpredictable.
It is sad that this happened.
What part of HPP did this occur?

A Hawaiian friend of mine said it this way "never turn your back on the ocean for she is always hungry."
So sorry to hear of that family's loss.

Conventional wisdom in Hawaii for opihi (limpet) pickers is you do it with two people: one person picking, the other person watching the wave action.

Lord, that is so sad. A stark reminder for someone who is new here like us...and our two teenaged kids coming to visit in December...very sad indeed.
