I'm in love with the wrong truck.

This will, however, likely mean more expense in terms of taxes, insurance, and registration fees, but only because of the commercial status, not your citizenship.

Does anyone have any idea how much I would have to pay to register and or insure a medium duty truck in Hawaii?

Actually, the DMV will make you weigh any vehicle in which they do not already have the base weight. I was stunned last year that they made me take our 04 Honda CR-V to the certified scales and return with the weight slip before they could tell me how much the registration would be. They claimed they had no established weight for that vehicle? Huh? There are hundreds of 04 Honda CR-V's on the island. Of course, I had to pay to get it weighed...

We too were made to go pay to have ours weighed. When we returned, the next person that helped us said they already knew the weight.
I figured the first guy has an uncle at the scales.
That's the way we roll around here.

I am under the (possibly mistaken) impression that "commercial" vehicles require a "commercial" safety inspection sticker. Not clear whether "commercial" is simply "heavy enough" or whether it requires a "commercial use", but I've definitely seen the stickers.

Example: in California, an open-bed pickup truck is registered as "commercial", but if you permanently attach a camper shell, you can register it as a "car" -- the "commercial" registration is just a different fee schedule, it has nothing to do with the intended use.

Is it cheaper or more expensive to register and insure a vehicle that has been designated as commercial?

I'm pretty sure it tells you the dry weight in the car manual.

But I have to admit I really like those trucks. I could imagine getting parts here on the island would be a nightmare. But wow, a 4x4 truck like that could go to some cool places on the island! Smile
