New Scuba Business Opening in Hilo
#1
Hey, just thought a few of you may be interested to know a new Scuba Diving and Whale Watching and Tours of Hilo Bay has come to town. They are called Lobo Del Mar. Their boat is currently docked next to Suisan's. They are still in the process of getting their compressor set up and a few other things ready, but they can take out up to 3 divers who have their own gear and tanks and such. They told me that normal 2 tank dive tours are $100. but just $90. for Kama'aina's. About time someone started doing easy boat dives for some of us older divers who hate making long swims out to the dive locations. The url is, http://lobodelmar.com/. I asked about discount rates for the Dive Hilo Dive Club but haven't been able to secure anything positive yet. Anyway, it's just one more positive indicater that Hilo is growing. I emailed them a welcome note and wished them well in their future with their business and hope that we can use this service often (at a reduced rate). Check um' out.

I went this afternoon on Lobo Del Mar's whale watching tour.

Wow! So many whales that I lost count. They work very hard to stay the legally required distance from the whales (like one of them said to me "I don't just want the whale to be safe from me, I want to be safe from the whale -- they're BIG"Wink. We saw spouts, rolls, breaches, flukes and tails galore.

Well worth the money. www.lobodelmar.com

What did they charge for the whale watching tour John? Sounds like you enjoyed your trip with them. How long did it last? They did have their boat at Suisan's but we live on Banyan drive and my other half goes fishing out back of our apartment, and she says their boat is now tied to a bouy out back.

Their website says $40 for a 1.5-2 hour trip. I think that's about the same as the short trips done in Monterey Bay, CA. I prefer the longer 6-7 hour trips, but I'll take what I can get here.

If you know folks who've been postponing getting their PADI Open Water Certification (either because they don't want to deal with the rigors of shore-diving on the Hilo side...or they don't want to deal with the equally exhausting 'round-the-island drive involved with Kona-side boat-diving), Lobo del Mar is a definite possibility.

A friend of mine, who's been toying with the idea of getting certified for months and months and months now, gave them a call ysterday, and was told that the regular price of $475.00 would be reduced to $400.00 for kama'ainas.

Price includes the manual, the video, the gear, confined dives in a pool, and open-water dives from their boat.

Not bad.

There's dredging taking place at the boat harbor near Suisan, so temporarily they are using Reed's Bay.

Yes, it was $40.
