As I was driving to Hilo for a family get-together yesterday, a red pickup loaded with bags of rubbish turned to go to the Keaau dump only to find the gate closed. As I drove by, all I could think about was Arlo Guthry's "Alice's Restaurant" story. Hee Hee! (Hope he didn't do what Arlo did.)

There was a large pile of rubbish just outside the gate of the Pahoa transfer station at 6.30 this morning. I offered to give the county lady a hand getting it to the container but she declined. While standing there, I noticed that there were no individual garbage bags. It was cases and cases of packaging (plastic wrap, styrofoam, broken-down cardboard boxes, etc.).
A double whammy! Dumped on one of the three days a year that the place is closed - and it was COMMERCIAL, not residential, refuse.
Truly sickening.
