Another Broadband question for HPP
#21
Hello all, any updates on Hawaiian Telcom DSL availability in HPP? We live near the bottom of Makuu, last time I asked HT they told me not to hold my breath. It's not fair, they have it all along Paradise, or so I'm told.

Dialup is such a drag. This would be even more of an Hawaiian Paradise (Park) if we had DSL.

cheers!

Like other wireless providers, Verizon is only as good as the signal strength. We are in Orchidland and our connection (and speed) improved markedly when the new tower at Church on a Sure Foundation on Hwy 130 went into service a few months back. However, some of the existing Verizon towers are not yet configured for broadband.

Also, a card slot is not necessary for such services which can also utilize an USB port. The internal connection is not as fast as a card but usually fast enough that it's not noticable, given the relatively slow connection speeds (we usually get downloads of between 300 and 800 Kbps, with surges up to 1.8 Mbps, which is about what was advertised). The cost is about $60 a month for unlimited use.

I'm at 13th and Makuu. Have had DSL here for almost 1 1/2 years. Just call and tell them you want it and they'll do the follow up for you. There is a special going on right now.. DSL, local, and unlimited to the mainland long distance for 55.95 a month. For the first year. My local calls and DSL is 57.00. Long distance calls are all done on the cell phones.

all this talk about high speed access has got me giddy once again. But a quick look out my window reminds me just where I am! This view acts as a quick reminder of the reality of it all!. Nothing gets done here in HAwaii unless there is all kinds of drama atached to it. As a matter of fact. Your more likely to get things done on Borneo before here! That includes high speed a decent price too. I'm sorry brah, but $60.00 a month is hardly worth it in my opinion. Hell, cable from Oceanic is cheaper than that! Plus the internet via satellite in my opinion is still rather slow.

Right now I have DSL from Hawaiiantel, and I will keep it that way until Oceanic comes into my neck of the woods. I had cable in Honolulu for over six years...I'm spoiled! The old oceanic speeds(two years ago) were faster than what I get from Hawaiiantel Comm via DSL these days. I find it weird too. But at times my DSL really acts like cable. Seems at certain times of day, my DSL is real sluggish. DSL looks & acts so much like cable at times to me. So I'm ready for Oceanic to service HPP....the entire HPP that is! Not just Beach Rd. where the "Rich & the Shameless live".

Two weeks ago I was in Honolulu staying in the Ala Moana area. Right where the Ala Wai has a turn around at Ala Moana end of blvd. I took my MacBook with me which is equiped with an Airport Card. Upon going wireless, I was able to pickup over 15 different networks from my condo there. Of course more than half of these networks are password protected. But three of the networks were from Ala Moana shopping Centre's Apple store!!!!![Big Grin] So I had a free wireless conection everyday day while there But Honolulu is full of 'Hot Spots', so the internet is not a problem there like here. I did notice a big speed difference there though. With DSL in Puna my computers crawl at times just like cable(shared lines). But my wireless connection in Honolulu was soooo snappy!!!

So why is high speed access so expensive here? For years I have been listening to the big voices telling me broadband should be cheaper now that there is more of it all around. Plus it should be waaaaaay faster too. Here this technology was developed, yet high speed access in South Korea & Japan was way faster than here why? Cable shouldn't be $50 a month either! Even if it was $25, it would still be expensive in my opinion!

Why do all companies feel the need to reem the buyer?

I pay $29.95 plus tax for DSL. It was $45.00 for DSL on the mainland when I moved in 2005. Cable was a bit less

I tried the Verizon wireless broadband about a month ago and it wasn't unlimited the $59 a month plan has a 5 gig download limit each month. Well I came close to this, since we use it for out TV and online gaming and such. So ended up taking it back and switching to sprint which is unlimited. I use an external antenna from ebay. Speeds are from 1 to 1.8 meg.

I agree $60/mo. is pricey but when you're off-grid, you don't have too many options. I'd love to have a true DSL-like connection, but this is adequate for my work. We also use an external antennae to boost the signal. When we first signed up two years ago it was actually $80/mo. unless you had a Verizon plan, which we already did. A friend recently said it had dropped to $60 for everyone, and I assumed that meant the unlimited plan. If that's not the case, sorry for misleading. Hopefully competition will push prices down.

I spoke to someone from Hawaiian Telcom today who told me we will never get DSL down where we are (bottom of Makuu) because we are more than 3 miles from 17th (I think) and Paradise. They said I should hassle Oceanic Time Warner ( Roadrunner ) instead, and if there are enough houses here they'll lay the cable.

I called Oceanic on 643-2337 (choose option 2 - start or change a service) and they said they'd look into it.

If everyone who can't get DSL in HPP does the same, maybe we can all get it a bit quicker.

FYI

There is progress being made, we just got notices on 18th and Kaloli that cable, digital phone and roadrunner are available. YAY! We're scheduled for installation in a couple of weeks. I currently have DSL and I was told I was extremely lucky to get it here, that some of my neighbors couldn't even get it, by Telcom.
