Heaven forbid the delivery ships stop for whatever reason for an extended period of time, but does any one know how many days worth of food are available in Big Island Supermarkets at any given time?

It depends! When the long shore strike was threatened, I think every sack of rice was off the shelves in hours. When the earthquake of 06 closed Kawaihae harbor, there were fewer items (papergoods, meats, produce & such) that we noticed all over the island for a couple of months, but we didn't noticed stripped shelves...

They tell me Rice and Toilet Tissue are the first to go! We keep an extra supply of each in our pantry. Laugh if you will but it isn't like they will expire. We actually keep a rather well stocked pantry. Hubby and I were talking just today and realize we could get by for four to six months on what is in the pantry and the freezers and it would be made quite easy with the garden, greenhouse and chickens for eggs. That is actually our goal. Just to be able to live six months with what is here no matter what happens. I imagine we would have a few visitors from time to time but we would be fine. A well stocked pantry seems just to be the smart thing to have on a remote island.
If there was one item we would race for I guess it would be flour. I can bake a lot of bread!!

Me thinks there is enough of an "air bridge" to keep the food and perishables coming (I keep about 2 weeks worth in backstock.) Its the propane supply that seems to be the weak link. I keep a good 60 days supply on hand

Think more MAJOR, (either an off the chart earthquake like Japan had in March, or a tsunami like the one in Japan in March - if we had BOTH!!! YIKES!!!) and even the air bridge infrastructure could be damaged... and there is a potential for that magnitude hitting here (geologic record has some indication of far worse hitting this island).... but in historical times the 7.9 in 1868 has been the worst....
Even a major disruption in the oil supply services (esp. to Honolulu) will cut off that air bridge for all but the most critical uses...

i think if we had a large disaster such as japan just had, big island food would be heading for honolulu not the other way around. the barges might be able to run even if the airports were closed but if electricity was gone and the chevron refinery was shut down there would not be fuel even for them. this might actually be good for the big island as a million people in oahu could make short order of our food supply. lets hope mother nature remains kind for awhile and everyone get your "victory gardens" going unless you think that is being "paranoid" according to some punawebbers...
