review: Kaleo's

I don't think that I have seen this above but Hawaii matches the Federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour and allows employers to reduce 'tipped employees' to $7.00 an hour.

Where I worked (in alaska) we started at min/wage. bartenders $1 more and cooks made a fair amount $15 tips/bonuses from employer. Dishwasher/busier also made min/wage
I always tipped out 10% or more each to busier and bar--- cooks depended on the day's events (my husband was one of the "chiefs") so some nights I could pay out 20 to 30%
A friend in Texas got paid $2.15 hour with guarantee of reaching the state min/wage (employer to pay difference) if not reached with tips.
I also had to report 8% of my daily tickets to the irs to be taxed.
I loved my job.. yes it was hard work my legs look like a road map!
Where I worked they also had a 15% for party's 8 or more. I just would tell the host--
"I know the menu says I add tip but I feel that is up to you" I meant it and I was never disapointed either!

That is too funny, Kapohcat! Everyone I ever dined with in California is exactly like those folks -- expecting the vegetables to come from the roof of the restaurant, and the chickens to have had a really good, free-range life before having their necks wrung.

We have not been to Kaleo often as we are not huge fans of the loud eateries. Thanks to friends of ours, found a great reprieve to Kaleos noisy atmosphere... their outdoor screened gazebo! (it is also a great 'trip' to get to!)

Oh, and Hawaii waitstaff are paid one of the highest 'Tipped Minimum Wage' in the country, currently at $7.00/hr (federal TMW minimum is $2.13):

Kaleo's is pretty good, but its just what your used to or expect... some items are very good and its more knowing what to order for us.. We don't go there much anymore cause it does get loud, and so many of our friends are great chefs its hard for any restaurants to compete... Regarding tips, my grandmother was a waitress in a diner and never made more than a coin for a tip. My daughter works in an upscale restaurant and averages about 200 a night.. I agree with kapohocat that is has a lot to do with the capability's of the waiter/waitress.. But 20% has pretty much been the norm for at least 20yrs.. Rarely does a server get any benefits what so ever.. And many times are the chief bread winner in the family... So being a cheap tipper is just stingy!!!!
