Good luck finding A GOOD Chinese restraunt in Puna. Everytime I go there I want Good Pork Hash. UGH...
Haven't found any yet. As a matter of fact, my girlfriend moved up there from Oahu and she still begs me to bring her some Char Siu Pork & Roast Pork when I come to visit. My Aunty has lived there her whole life and still hasn't found a very good Chinese place. They go nuts when they come here though. I did like the Pork Hash and food in Waimea. It was in the Parker Ranch mall food Court I believe. We did make Manapua one day, and I have to admit, the filling came out pretty darn good but the bread Sucked. Pork hash is very easy to make yourself. It's cheaper and you get more to freeze for later. Good luck and let me know what you find. Aloha, Makalealea

I can't think of any chinese restaurants in Puna but a restaurant that I really like with Asian food is Lemongrass Cafe in Kea`au. I've been on a long search for manapua on this island. I don't think any family makes it here. You would think with the Asian community in Hilo that their would be fresh manapua around. I myself wait till I go to O`ahu to get a big load of manapua from Manoa Market Place. It's worth carrying home on the plane. I love that manapua. I also had good fresh manapua in Hanapepe, Kaua`i. Just a little mom and pop store which had fresh lilikoi chifon pie and baked manapua. Onolicious! Going there again in March. The gas stations and 7 elevens sometimes have imported manapua which they warm up and sell but it could never compensate for the taste of fresh stuff.
Maka, One of the teachers I worked with at an elementary school in Kona gave me a recipe for manapua. There is a trick in the yeast for the dough. I never attempted to make it cause I really suck at making bread, even with a bread maker I think the yeast and the elevation we are living in may have played a big role in bread making...or I just suck at making bread. I just ate at a Chinese place in Pahoa on Saturday. I forget the name because the quality of the food was forgettable.

I ate at that Chinese place in Pahoa once and can't remember the name either. Now if I could just forget the awful food . . .
Cheers, Jerry

I hope someone who knows how to make real manapua will open up soon. They will have a line of customers.

LOL Momi, You have to let the dough rise, smash it down and let it rise again. The more you do that the better. We only did it twice. So we pretty much screwed it up. Put the dough in the oven on very low, 200d. But keep your eye on it cause it will take off if you use fast rising yeast. I'm going to try again soon and this time I'll smash it down about 4-5 times before filling it with Char Sui. Then let it rise again. Momi, I think I know you. Do you have a twin sister? Are you married to David Subiono from Kahalu'u. Email me if I'm correct. Aloha, Makalealea

Hi Maka,
I tried emailing you but was unable to. Yah, thats my husband. I'm not a twin but my younger sisters are. They are one year younger. Yah, I kind of thought but don't remember you writing that you were from Kane`ohe or Kahalu`u. |
