The hike is very, very dangerous. I don't think they want anyone doing it anymore. I have tried it and turned around. There was someone a couple of years ago who spent all night stuck in rocks with a broken leg. It's also very difficult to tell where the cliff edge is. YMMV but I wouldn't recommend it. There is a guy who gives guided hikes to the flow. His name is Bo Lozoff. bolozoff.org
Good guy and very experienced

Wear worm clothes and have a waterproof windbreaker or raincoat.Take a duffel bag with a towel and plastic bag for your camera. The smoothest ride is the seats on either side of the bridge.

Don't leave anything in your car at Pohoiki !!

We did the hike yesterday. It's 4.5 miles each way at a slow pace (2 1/2 hours each way).

Here's the GPS track in.

There are white poles plotted along the route (for part of the way) and rock cairns the last 1/2. Give yourself plenty of time during the daylight hours, take water and you'll be fine.

Of course I agree that many do it with no problem. Good advice to take it easy. Bring strong flahlights and maybe extra batteries. Wear sensible shoes. Remember there is no cell phone coverage if you do have a problem.

HVO added an array of new webcams this week to the crater & Pu'u O'o, including mobil webcams & a few thermal imaging cams. If you have the HVO webcams bookmarked, no need to re-bookmark, if you do not, here is the link:

Thanks, Carey, for letting us know.

Go with Tropical Helicopter Tour out of Hilo Airport and ask for the “Feel the Heat” ride.
They take the doors off the helicopter and it feels like you’re flying in a jeep.
Then when they get above the vent or lava you have to cover your face from the heat.
PS you won’t get sea sick either
I’ve done it twice with visitors and it’s much better then inside a closed chopper[:X]
