But I was mistaken it was a baby mongoose.
So that leads me to the question--
I've seen rabbits for sale pets or for meat I was wondering are there "wild" rabbits around?
And if a pet excaped would/could this lead to problems? You all know how rabbits are!

I have seen rabbits running across Panaewa stretch. I don't know if they were tame at one time or just wild.

I've been wondering about this too, especially in light of the history of problems resulting from rabbit introduction in Australia that the link above references. I've seen a loose rabbit, presumably a former pet, up here in upper Fern Forest. You've got to wonder why the DLNR and other state agencies seem unconcerned about pet rabbits and the potential for a new invasive species introduction into a mostly predator-free environment.

No folks - rabbits are not native and should definitely not be running around in the wild. Sometimes a pet rabbit escapes. If you sight a loose rabbit, please call Dept. of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife asap, so they can try to trap it. Mahalo.

The rabbit was on the Hilo side of 10th and ate all the tender watermelon plants coming up. Some dogs chased the rabbit around but he literally ran them in circles and then hopped away.

Though I can't imagine who would do what about it, it's against hawaii law to "loose" or otherwise release a rabbit. Found out when I went to post my "lost rabbit" flyer at the humane society.
Poor little bunny, never found him.
