Question Re: Building Etiquette (Rubbish)
#1
Hello friends,

Question. As an owner builder, I am hiring individuals/companies to fill various roles in the construction of our new home . The carpenter recently completed his portion (rough in) and has left several large piles of material scraps. The drywallers are currently working and are, of course, making a pile of all their scraps. My question...is it fair for me to expect these workers to haul away their rubbish after completing their part of the project?

Thanks for sharing your insight/experience,

Ryan

depends if you put it in the bid/contract. I'm sure if you paid a bit extra they would haul it away. But trash attracts trash. Since there was already a mound the sheetrockers probably figured you were going to get rid of it anyway so why not add to it?

You could always say something and ask if they could pack out the waste material.

Is your drywaller a Contractor or did you hire piece workers? For piece workers, you get the opala.

Ryan - go on freecycle and I bet you will get a few people to pick up your drywall scraps.

Then you, and your drywaller, and the landfill will be happy.

We put our building scrap on the front lawn with a sign that said "free" and within 24 hours, all of it was gone, including the sign... We reassured our neighbors that any mess would be cleaned up...and delivered that message as they picked therough the pile themselves

I think that the contractor should include a clause for disposing the rubbish as well. The problem with not having ample space for your rubbish is that you will tend to use the road right in front of the area as a place where you are going to dump the trash. Or if there is a vacant lot, you could use that for the mean time, but you have to ensure that you will eliminate the trash after.
