Politics of moving to Puna
#31
Since you're still on the mainland and you've been doing some calculation, tell me:
will you be spending more on energy in Iowa or in Hawaii, do you think?
I don't know the answer, I always assume not having to heat or cool a house makes
up for the high rates (though I agree they should be much lower).

"to buy a house there, or build...No...Buy a house."
You have attained much wisdom already, grasshopper.

I love these little smiley faces....

Since we spend over $6000 a year here, I think our cost would go down, part of the bills are because we have the Kennel business, which does pay for itself, and which income we will not have when we come to Hawaii.

So just for our house I figure we spend about $400 a month for heat/ac, hot water and everything else. It is hotter than hell and colder than hell with only 2-3 months of moderate weather. So, yes I would imagine our actual costs would go down even at 40 cents a kwh.

Which get me back to the real question, can we afford to live in Hawaii, well if all went as planned we should be able to buy a home there with the proceeds from our place here, I know it would be modest in comparison, our house is 1800 sq ft here, 3 br 2 bath, and 3 out buildings.

We have literally tons of stuff to sell too. The real estate and business will be fairly easy to sell, as it is profitable and has many repeat customers. We have 2 employees in addition to me and my wife, and are very busy year round. We do not need the money from the business to live or pay the bills.

We are not wealthy by Iowa standards, and certainly not by Hawaii standards, but are comfortable, and have NO bills to speak of.[:p]

Anyway

www.wienerdogsrus.com or "Wild Rose Kennel" on Face Book is our information.

Here I am rambleing again...

What apeals to me the most about Puna...
Weather, Laid back attitude, Close to the ocean, Slower pace, Not having to worry about freezing to death, or heat stroke, Healthier enviroment and available food.

Since I got sick [:I] I can hardly stand the heat and cold, the weather was 80 here today, same as Pahoa, wind was 10mph, sunny with clouds, PERFECT even though the humidity was higher than usual for folks here it was and is fine with me. 76%.

Good Morning Fellow Travelers [8D]

While I have your attention, and am getting a bunch of good information, what about....

Home Insurance? The kind that if Pele' get's pissed off, or the big winds blow in, or it just burns down for no good reason? Earthquake?, all that stuff.

Is car insurance just plain stupid or is it Ok? I can drive beaters, we don't now, but had to over the years.[^]

I am thinking about leaving on Oct 15th for a one month stay, by myself. Any good ideas about a B&B or a furnished rental near Pahoa???

This is so I can see if it would be feasable with my health issues and check out integrating myself into the community...[Smile]

I know there is internet but is it sattelite, cable, dls or wireless?

Or a combination of all those? In different areas.

For rentals, check out vrbo.com - there are lots of places in the Pahoa area. Regarding internet, the area is served by a combination of all of the above, including cellular. But most neighborhoods have only one option, and some have only dial-up. If internet is important to you, be sure to call the various providers and make sure it is available, and be specific in your question. If you ask Hawaiian Tel if they provide DSL in Orchidland, they'll say yes. But if you ask if they can offer service to your address, they'll say no, because their facilities are maxed out.

"Hawaiian Paradise Park is spotty"
That depends where you are. Some parts of HPP have cable, some have DSL, almost all can get Aloha Broadband.
