Well, technically you can see the sunset anywhere on the island (if the weather permits)

One night, returning from Kona, we stopped to see the sunset at Southpoint, then drove back to Puna and all of a sudden the full moon was rising over Kilauea. Wow, was that cool!

I have found that the VOG usually means the sun just disappears into the low hanging VOG bank with no real "sunset" in Kau and Kona. My friends who live on that side have confirmed this, they bought a house with beautiful sunset views from their lanai not long before Halemaumau opened up and now they get a true sunset about once or twice a month, usually when the Kona winds are blowing the VOG back to us.

maybe I just get lucky? But I've seen beautiful sunsets in kona every time I go to costco. No green flash yet... Seen it many times when I lived in waianae for many years. I think Waianae / yokaha are the best sunsets on hawaii. Probably because the property I lived on had a sunset / ocean view...

When I lived in Naalehu, I loved going to the scenic overlook (ing) Honuapo to see the sun rise over the water AND going to the scenic pullout between Naalehu & Ocean View to see the sun set in the water. Just like Key West!!
