Freight Forwarder to California
#1
Aloha,

Does anyone know or has anyone used a Freight Forwarder to ship boxes to/from Hilo?

I am moving back to the Mainland (San Francisco Bay Area) and I need to send about 10 boxes back, nowhere near enough for a container and I'm trying to find the cheapest way to do this. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

UPS Ground is the cheapest OUT of all the regular carriers.
Fed Ex is +/- a dollar or two but takes up to 8 business days instead of 5 like UPS Ground.

FWIW > A lot of stuff that goes 'Ground' still gets to Cali in two days !

USPS Parcel Post Can be cheap too but its 'gone' for 6 weeks or more.

Priority Mail Cheapest comeing IN.

Hope above helps ... For bigger stuff I don't know.

aloha,

Hawaiian Express handles a lot of that.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Just have a garage sale! It's only "STUFF"... I only brought 4-5 boxes and never missed it until it got here and I had to deal with and wonder why I needed all this crap. But the pictures look nice after I got them hung up.

Thanks everyone for your input. Yes, I AM having a huge Garage Sale, but some things I won't part with and those have to come back with me.

I'll post the Garage Sale separately. (It will be next Saturday.)

I discovered the rates depend on the location you are moving from. For me, USPS was the cheapest and then I used U-Haul by buying a U-box for moving my bigger items.

"Usually" the cheapest way is to put it on the barge yourself. Of course, that requires you to be near the arriving city to pick it up.

Cheapest "no hassle" way is USPS parcel post. But be prepared for it to take 4-6 weeks and your boxes to take a BEATING. I recommend really overdoing it on the tape.

There is an air cargo hauler with KOA to LAX service: http://www.pacificaircargo.com/ Because its a cargo flight there are less security regulations to navigate. Kalitta Air is another, but you'd have to call for their schedule. They are the ones who fly the cattle to the mainland.

I've never checked the UPS rates going OUT but I understand they are cheaper than the rates coming in.

FYI, If you're shipping a bunch of boxes to the same location, USPS will palletize them, to keep them together. I sent a bunch of stuff parcel post from the mainland, including several media mail boxes. Everything arrived together in a couple of weeks; media mail usually takes a month or more.
