I had a friend in lower Puna that was here a couple years ago, his name was "$500VanDan"
he bought a beaterVan the day he showed up... and used it for nearly 2 years before it broke down.. 730 days for $500

YEs, the car rental places here charge insane fees. I shopped and shopped and shopped and could not find one for less than 90/day when we moved here.

For 3 months, with the high price of car rentals, it is probably cheaper to ship your own car over.
