Puna Community Medical Center has is requesting a long term lease of State land on Hwy 130, across from the water dept. fill-up site just Kea'au side of Pahoa. The purpose is the construction of a comprehensive medical center, with the first phase being a free-standing emergency room. The DLNR has given an "approval in concept" with the condition that an environmental assessment be done. The Draft EA is now complete and ready for public comment. Copies of the Draft EA are available at the Pahoa, Keaau and Mt.View libraries. There will be a scoping meeting on Monday, Oct. 28 from 6-8 pm at the Pahoa Neighborhood Facilityto provide the community with all the information and take mana'o. Everyone is urged to attend. For more information contact malamaopuna@yahoo.com.

An emergency room sounds like a great asset to the community. However, the PCDP discourages development along the highway ("sprawl + congestion = bad"). Isn't there a proper "commercial center" where this facility could be located?

The PCDP refers to commercial sprawl. The emergency room project is not commercial. Also, the PCDP supports the need for such a project. See Section 3-11 through 3-13. The benefit of leasing state land is the price. The 800 sq.ft. clinic in the Pahoa Marketplace pays $2,058 a month. A nonprofit can't afford that and still provide services to people with no money or insurance.
Please come to the scoping meeting, review all the materials, ask your questions, etc.

The Pahoa Neighborhood Facility is the official name of the Pahoa community center. Do you know where the pool is? The new Senior Center? Behind (mauka of) Bank of Hawaii.
