What to Grow in HPP?
#11
Yeah, the slugs are everywhere. I have caught my kids "playing with them". I freaked out of course. Rat lung is scary, but I think if you boil stuff then you are safe. I suppose I should read more about it, because it is around.

Kelena, you are welcome to come over. It's less than two miles from yours.

I have a few ducks that roam around the yard wherever they like. If you don't mind them, I mean their poops and smell, then let me know.

Yes you gotta wash your veggies. Set up some slug traps and such. I am not sure how to keep them away from the leafy greens.... must be a way.

It is easier just to cook all the greens in the microwave. I hardly ever eat a salad anymore. It is pretty scary to consider.

I am not so sure it is that scary, I mean it has been in SE Asia for a very long time. Common sense precautions seem to be in order. Mosquito born diseases and the traffic accidents are much greater hazards.

Leafy greens the best luck had was with a hanging gutter system I devised (I think from anothers' post here...but not my original idea) after the sluggers figured out my copper wire on pots maze....they never got into the hanging gutters, but with remodeling (de-termiting) that lanai area, the hanging gardens of Keaau left our abode....

As for what to grow...well the list is far shorter if you want what cannot grow, even some stone fruit (we have peaches - actually 2 ripen last year, some have had apples -Anna & Dorset- but those are "pushing the limits" plantings)...and there are production growers on an acre in HPP... so if you think, no way. too much work...you will still have a bunch of things wanting to grow on your lot, and plant management does become a part of your life here...

Added: Oh, and from your post, you are asking for planting now for care in a year or so...no need to even worry a bit about veggies now...

The hanging gutter idea is a great one, Carey. Did you use a 2 X 4 underneath to provide support? I am thinking some pipe for the structure and a length of gutter with a 2 x4 or 2 x 6 hanging from some chain could be the ticket.

We hung it from a lanai beam, so no other support was needed, here is a system description that I may have used:

but you could try the system that was in Martha Stewart Living - a much more high end copper idea (also has a good way to pair up the flat back gutters, if you are utilizing repurposed flat back (K) gutter)

Here's another variation on the gutter gardens: If you don't have used gutters and don't want to spend the bucks on new ones, find a stand of the big bamboo - the yellow with green stripes. Cut some lengths so that they end with the internodes on the outside. Split them lengthwise down the middle. You can drill a few holes for drainage along the curved bottom. No need remove the internodes. They can help to divide the Bibb from the Oak Leaf or whatever. This is also very attractive. You can hang them in any number of ways, including macrame, heavy duty suji, rope, etc.

go for raised bed, can grow most anything in HPP. gotta watch for bugs, but raised beds and neem oil should do da trick!
