Wasn't the interisland ferry trip something like 14-20 hours (each way) while also not being cheaper than airfare?

It took about 2 or 3 hours .

It was projected to be about what Inter-island fares are right now !!

The big difference was that you could drive your car onto the ferry !!

If memory serves, the ferry trip would have been about 4-5 hours between Kohala and Honolulu with fares roughly those of inter-island flights (I think 2-3 hours is a little optimistic, Obie, but they were certainly not 14-20 hour trips). The big advantage is that you could take your own car, like Obie says, so even if the fares ended up a little more expensive than flying it'd end up being cheaper in the end for many.

Jason808 - going from memory, but the reason the ferry didn't happen is because the state didn't ask them to do an environmental impact study because they thought one wasn't needed. The courts thought otherwise and it was only then that the company went bankrupt because they'd invested so much money in a service they couldn't supply. I don't think bankruptcy caused the ferry's failure, it was a state government screw-up. I'm sure others here can give more details, but my impression is that most people in the islands really wanted the ferry service.

Sputnut - I gave one example of inter-island fares earlier in this thread. If you mean Kama'aina rates I don't think they do them any more, but it's easy to do the research yourself. Fares change on a daily basis and also which flights you want to take and when will make a difference. Both Hawaiian and Mokulele have their own websites where you can research the answer to your question.

If Kama'aina means special lower rates for locals, then, yes that is what I was talking about, since those would not be posted for all to see on their websites.

What do people put in "checked bags" when going somewhere for just a couple weeks? I could never figure this out. I went to europe with a 5 year old- for 2 weeks and only took a carry-on.

There was a very loud crowd on Kau'ai that was fanatically against the Superferry. A group even swam out in a harbor to block the ferry from entering and the police were called. Here on the Big Island my impression is that most people were in favor of the ferry.

Not an accidental government screwup as I remember. The problem was former Governor Lingle's administration "somehow" gave a pass to the ferry company on an environmental impact assessment (or statement) and the company happily went along with that. The courts then ruled that was illegal. At that point the environmental assessment would have taken so long (should have been done as a regular part of business early in the ferry's development phase) that the company couldn't financially sustain the two ferries they had ordered without providing paying services and declared bankruptcy.

ferry - if I remember right it was a military program - started by an admiral after it failed the boats were picked up for a song by the military

they really wanted those boats - grin

"The Navy acquired the two twin-hulled ferries from the U.S. Maritime Administration, which put them up for sale after purchasing them for $25 million each at a September 2010 foreclosure auction.
The federal agency had bid on the vessels using a $150 million guarantee that the federal government made to Hawaii Superferry LLC to build the 836-passenger ferries. The Maritime Administration was owed more than $135 million by the bankrupt Hawaii Superferry."

peteadams is correct. The Lingle admin proposed, and the Legislature passed, a bill to specifically exempt the ferry from having to prepare an environmental impact statement, which is a pretty basic part of doing any kind of project like this. That was very obviously illegal, as they were warned at the time, so you could call it an intentional government screwup. Unsurprisingly, the bill was overturned in court and an EIS was ordered, but by that time they had made the first few runs and filed for bankruptcy rather than conduct the study.

OTOH, if the ferry was up and running, it's almost guaranteed that there would be coqui and little fire ants on all the islands by now.

Checked bags used to be a great way to bring stuff over. 3 FREE checked bags per flight meant we moved here for just the cost of the ticket.
