Best shipping company to move with...
#31
'm doing 2 moves from SF to Hilo 6 years apart. 6 years ago I used a Matson, off-loaded in Honolulu and barged by Young Bros. to Hilo. There were no ReloCubes or Pods that came to Big Island in those days. I also shipped a 30' travel trailer to live in while I built and an 8 year old van w/ Matson. Prices have gone up almos yearly with Matson. But, now, with the ReloCube option to BI, I'm going for that… to ship a few more rooms of items.

It is true, you need to figure the value of your shipped items vs the cost to do so.

In my opinion…don't ship cheap furnishings made w/ compressed sawdust and glue or stapled together which... will simply expand w/ HI humidity and fall apart very quickly… only ship good hardwood stuff, that has been termite treated or is made of teak, redwood, cedar or other impervious to insect woods.

You can buy cheap crap (expensively) here on BI or, more cheaply from KMart when it has its sales and, you completely assemble it. But, quality furniture you can't easily get here. Koehnen's, 80 years in business, closed last year. Now, it's allpretty much Asian-made stuff or… if you're lucky you can find something you can live with from house-moving sales. I personally don't like to spend the time finding out about, traveling to and, looking through other people's overpriced junk. And, believe me, used stuff is way overpriced here!

Quality furniture, tools, gas-run machinery, antiques and personal memorabilia, electronics, your best kitchen equipment, good condition & quality mattresses, your wine cellar, Granny's silver, Persian rugs, original art… this kine stuff… bring dat. Forget your mainland wardrobe and shoes. Buy new here. Macy's has sales almost every day in Hilo and there is Amazon Prime which still doesn't charge shipping!

Then, get a couple of pit bulls to run free in your fenced yard!

I am moving there now, and I used a company called TruNorth. Ask for Jeff.

My car shipped from Florida and a 7x7x4 pallete.

I called over 10 places, they were the best price and most qualified and skilled. Be careful because there are some jabronees with a low price and you can tell that cant even spell shipping.

How much was the total for the shipping of your car and a 7x7x4 pallete?

UGhhhhh... I take it all back about this company... They were charging me (from florida) under 5k for everything BUTTTTT

NOW, they are saying that the company does not insure the belongings and that I should insure the things and my car ?

Sounds like bull****. If i paid someone to drive my wife to the airport, do I have to pay them extra to not get into an accident on the way ???

Is this normal ?!

I was going to say: wait until you get your stuff over here in one piece before you recommend anybody!

Looking at shipping costs vs. selling your stuff and buying again in Hawaii.
I did that.
With all my woodworking equipment it was way cheaper to ship it. I don't know if anyone's looked at the pricing of woodworking machinery on the Big Island, but I did and I was shocked.
