Hiking with Dog
#11
Shipman properties there are also a wild life preserve. They are very strict about keeping dogs on leash to protect the nene, turtles and other wild life.

If you want to see what is widely known to be the best white sand beach on this island, visit KAUNA'OA BAY, very beautiful. The sand is like powder and the water is crystal clear, Google it.

I've also heard the same about Shipman beach. Supposedly there is a strong rip current at the far side of the small bay. If you "swim" I would keep it to paddling around in knee high water, but even waist high water in a rip can be dangerous.

Just as a public service message: don't try to fight a rip current. Let it take you out while swimming laterally. The problem for places like Shipman and elsewhere on this island is that after you've swum laterally far enough to escape the rip, you might be facing a lava wall break. At this point I think I'd just tread water and wait for the helicopter. Still better than dying.
